The Eribal Village Homeowners’ Association successfully conducted an election on March 8, 2024. On April 5, 2024, at the KPSFI Surallah Office, the recently elected officials met with KPS Foundation (KPSFI) staff to review the necessary documentation for the association’s registration with the Department of Human Settlement and Urban Development (DHSUD).
The importance of homeowners registering with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) was discussed at the start of the conference. It was underlined that DHSUD registration ensures compliance with government regulations and provides homeowners with legal recognition and protection. Access to several government initiatives and incentives intended to improve living conditions and foster community development is also made possible by this registration. A number of topics pertaining to property ownership, association management, and community development are discussed throughout the meeting as well.
The Homeowners Association (HOA) plays a crucial role in community development. By establishing community rules, managing shared facilities, and organizing events, HOAs foster a sense of unity and belonging among residents, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of life within the community. The Eribal HOA is also aware that with the existing program’s format, it could be difficult to secure the substantial money and extra resources needed for community development for KPSFI, a nonprofit that offers self-help programs. Alternatively, the HOA may obtain accreditation by registering with national government agencies that promote community development or by participating with the local special bodies of their different local government units. The communities of Yusa Village of General Santos City and Abrea Village of Polomolok are prime examples of how collaborations foster community development.
To enhance the optimal functioning of the HOA, elected members of the Board of Directors will oversee various association committees. Romeo Tamanggong leads the Grievance Committee, addressing disputes among homeowners and between homeowners and the association. Judith Bercades heads the Election Committee, responsible for organizing and overseeing future association elections. Melanie Calambro chairs the Audit Committee, ensuring transparency in financial management through regular audits and asset inventory. Jane Balogo leads the Gender and Development (GAD) Committee, promoting equality and community representation. Joseph Adelantar heads the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Committee, coordinating with local government units to implement safety measures.
During the discussion, guidelines for managing and handling association members were emphasized to foster a harmonious and productive community environment. Key principles included effective communication, fair treatment, conflict resolution, and active member engagement. Officers must recognize the significance of consistent action and principled behavior, maintain high ethical standards for themselves and others, and be willing to assert their convictions even in the face of peer pressure or potential ridicule, acting with honor and truthfulness.
During the meeting, Gelsa Pocdol, the head of KPSFI’s Education and Training and Community Mortgage Program (CMP) unit, as well as a council member of the National Anti-Poverty Commission – National Urban Poor Sectoral Council (NAPC-NUPSC), delivered an inspiring speech. Ms. Pocdol emphasized the crucial role of HOAs in community development and encouraged association officers to proactively engage in HOA activities. She also highlighted the importance of collaborating with government agencies to address community development and advocate for homeowners’ rights.
The Eribal Village Homeowners’ Association meeting concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment among the officers and members. The discussions and insights shared during the meeting are expected to guide the association’s officers in their initiatives and strategies moving forward, fostering a stronger, more united, and resilient community.
